Altiplano Who are we?

COEX: Sharing the Land with Wildlife, Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. COEX was co-founded by Adrian Treves, PhD and Lisa Naughton, PhD. COEX promotes the coexistence of people and wild animals. We believe that people and wildlife share a common destiny and that future generations deserve the same richness of life on Earth we have enjoyed. We study and solve conflicts that threaten human security and wildlife populations at home and around the world. Our approach to conflicts integrates strategic planning of conservation with thorough consideration of the human dimensions of environmental problems.

For the last 14 years, we have conducted scientific research to understand the conservation and management of wildlife in rural areas used for crop and livestock production. We began as the Lake Superior Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (link). In 2005, we established COEX to enhance our efficiency and broaden our appeal.

Today, we retain our traditional focus on large carnivores such as wolves, big cats, and bears, as well as other wildlife that pose a threat to human safety or livelihoods, such as elephants and large primates. We conduct extension and outreach to the people who pay the costs of living with wildlife. We use the information generated by our research to inform policy, management and affected stakeholder communities. Our work is featured in more than 45 scientific and popular media articles.
